I die for a selfie

On these days, shallow people measure their achievements by the “friends” on social media, the “likes” they get on every post, the amont of “selfies” they make and publish. As I mentioned in other posts, this is what advertising and media want, these are the false values they seed in the absence of family or school values, now vanishing in this modern absurd world, where ficticious needs are created and people embrace them as if it was life or dead.

In a world where now “celebrities” rule, not precisely a role model to follow, people have always taken pictures of themselves, in old times you always could get someone  kindly taking a photo of you (or couple) at a site but the invention of the name “selfie” and the adoption and spreading of it in the showbiz, the paraphernalia around it, has reached ridiculous and unbeareable limits of indecency and bad behavior, showing the dark side of most people.

If you travel, in/out of your Country, you will see bunchs of people arriving to iconic places and in five minutes they get the camera/phone/Ipad out and take selfies, they do not spend but a few seconds looking or enjoying the site, the selfie is enough, no matter if a number of people are there trying to enjoy their visit. Noisy, uneducated, arrogant, jumping and screaming all over the place, the goal is the selfie, not the place. A paralell can even be made for most of those 4×4 aficionados running with their expensive machines anywhere just for the fun of 4×4, all what they say about the places they visit is bullshit (just a way to justify the absence of crowds) , they do not admire the scenery or anything, only their machines, they do not even  take photos, only if it is a TV program.

This behavior is turning worse by the day, as this recent report in Costa Rica shows

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/19/world/americas/tourists-thwart-turtles-from-nesting-in-costa-rica.html?_r=0

Selfies or selfishness is reaching extremes that only human race (Homo porcinus) is capable of doing. What is next? Anything is possible.

Man is a freak of Nature, a mistake in Evolution.

Man…inhuman?

Man has broken all the schemes in the animal world, all other organisms of all kinds show a behavior based on their strict genetic code that regulates them and Nature takes care to mediate before any alteration on the balance occurs, ensuring the Biological Diversity that has allowed life on Earth shortly after its formation (some 3,000-3,500 million years ago) and the development of advanced life dating back around 500 million years.

The man began to write its own evolutive storyline about 7 million years ago, won the title of Homo sapiens merely some 100,000 back and reached adulthood after the last ice age, 10,000 years ago.

Since then he has been able to bring to extinction countless species of plants and animals by wholesale hunting, poaching or destroying the habitats and biodiversity. Man sets a price on everything, not only to products and services but to land, environment, animals, plants and even human life. Wars are a way to use his animal inherited component to go beyond reason and reach his ultimate goals. Man kills but not to get the kill to eat, man kills to obtain power, kills for money, kills for sex, he even kills for pleasure. The other fellow humans are only worth to the extent that they are useful, cities are important because they focus their chances on economic revenues, now cities are almost miniature polluted countries. Man closes his eyes and turns his head to the limited capacity of the planet’s resources, breeds wildly in numbers and not even cares about the impoverished world he will leave to his descendants. On the one hand we see billionaires showing off their fortunes, mainly obtained over the innocence or human stupidity and shallowness and at the same time over a billion people are starving or eating very poorly but a billion pets are fed as parasites buying its “love”….

Humanity is a concept based on a the human capacity to show a whole set of feelings that animals can’t because they do not have them but this man is getting more and more hypocritical by the day, more heartless, more cruel, more inhuman.

Environmentally Friendly? Really?

The dawn of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain on the second half of the XXVIII century brought the biggest economical, technological and social changes in human history since the Neolithic age.

The increase in urban population in cities with medieval layout meant overcrowding, unsanitary conditions and the appearance of the first social pathologies: alcoholism, prostitution and crime, from 800 million inhabitants 250 years ago we increased to almost ten fold today.

That huge population expansion with virtually no control, has produced enormous changes in the ecosystems on earth, disturbances that Nature effectively could regulate before through natural processes of transformation and degradation, now were no longer possible because there were millions of new substances for which she has no natural processes of transformation, on the other hand the amount of waste produced by the man is so big that it constantly accumulates as environmental pollution.

Man can NEVER understand completely Nature, had to split it in a myriad of small fields trying to explain how it works and in the end many of these fields, known as Sciences, can not be paged together.

On the last decades, pressed by some tragic consequences appearing on the environment, man has invented the term “environmentally friendly” as an umbrella masking many of the commercial activities leading to pollution, putting in the data base sheet many chemical limits lower that the previous ones but never what –on my opinion as a Chemist- can be called friendly with the environment, first because man do not fully undestand how the environment works and second because none of those limits are near to what they are in Nature.

Lets face it, lets be honest, scientist are hired by private companies to “test and establish limits of chemicals of human waste products (of any kind), the governmente hire another group of acientists to prove it and once the bill is established, companies are free to exploit the resources legally. It happens in almost all kinds of human enterprises, mining, manufacturing, food industry, water recycling, building industry, fisheries, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, the list is limitless.

I do not want to introduce any discussion about corruption, either in Science, Government or private companies, that factor, absolutely stuck in Homo sapiens genes, can be a matter of another discussion.

Refugees, a global issue?

Does Australian politicians know what are they doing bringing 12.000 refugees into the Country? Are they simply improvising and succumbing under the international pressure of those powerful countries that start or favor wars….as a business? Australia’s economy is mainly based on mining, real estate and retailers, the workers floating around the incredible (artificial) high prices of housing are probably the best paid at the moment, many are making billions, the government lowers interest rates (to historical low values) and make them richer…. and other people poorer, gess who?. But Australia has many other problems, as any other country, public services are deteriorating rapidly, especially health services, leaving people without jobs and tax payers without assistance, there are many people living on Centrelink benefits, legally or not (tax payers money), jobs are hard to find, electricity bills are the highest in the world, obesity, drug consumption and alcohol are serious growing problems that increase pressure on public heath. While government policies (any party) go in one direction (the best paid politicians in the world), the economy goes the other way and they do not seem to understand it or look the other way. Fighting other countries wars and getting as counterpart the consequences of it in terms of war expenses, death soldiers and lots of refugees does not seem the right way to go, at least for me….and I sceptic, solidarity among humans only works one way….

Is Democracy good for everyone?

This subject has ben analyzed by many experts, many times, during a long period of time, here my own version. Most industrialized first world countries show democracy as the way to standout from the crowd, together with freedom, entrepreneurs, educated citizens, a non invasive State, law enforcement and more. Most of these countries may have had a certain form of democracy from several centuries back. Many countries are industrialized but the population is typically 3rd wordily, others have been ruled by dictators practically since they were born or have had glimpses of democracy from time to time and many still have very ancients forms of government dating centuries ago or millennia. Is Democracy good for everyone? Giving a look at the daily press headlines in this convulsed world the conclusion is obvious. In many latin american countries democracy and populism has given raise to a new inhabitant that decides with his vote the faith of the Country. Below a common profile.

Age: middle thirties

Education: left early primary school

Profession: none, sells anything, legal or illegal

Civil State: single, partnership, married, divorced, occasional, or all of them at a given time

Goal in life: don’t work much, get as much money as possible (during the week)

On weekends: bear, partying, lottery, sex with any available

Children: several, does not know exactly how many, he does not care, no sense of parent ship

Future: the same but better, perhaps a payment from government could help..

“I was born here, I deserve to have a share on the country’s resources and money”

End.

Animal Rights?, the Right Ones..

There are half a billion dogs on the planet and if we add cats and other pets the number skyrockets to over a billion. There are also about a billion people that does not feed well, ranging from malnutrition to famine but….. we prefer to look the other side while we feed pets, give them living facilities, grooming, pet-sitting, entertainment, psychologic consultation, vets, insurance, medicines, hospitals, surgical attention and more, much more. Many, many people do not have access to that quality of life. There are exceptions though….working dogs as sheppards, trained dogs to detect bombs, illegal money, drugs, fires, rescue, dogs for the blind, dogs for vigilance, dogs for people that lost all loved ones are all out of the question, what I am against are the pets converted into parasites, just suckling resources to fulfill man’s miseries.

Besides that, there are thousands of NGO defending the rights of animals to avoid abuse by man but most of them refer to pets (mainly dogs) and animals used/trained for entertainment. Most of those people do not have any idea that hundreds of millions of animals are massacred every year on behave of feeding stupid culinary,  medicinal or economical apetite. Sharks fin soup at 100$/plate, (tasteless but flavored with a cube) causes 100 million sharks to be de-finned and launched to the sea still alive. The wholesale “sport” hunt in Africa, the unproved “oriental medicine” based on myths make kill a huge amount of elephants, rhinos, big cats in general for those “special” parts that cure or invigorate sexual powers. Besides dozens of other examples, the continuous destruction of habitats leads to death to numerous species causing the unbalance of Nature’s equilibrium.

All of the above is much more important in terms of “human rights” that caring for pets, once species are gone, are gone forever and it has a crucial influence in human life, man spits to the sky and then tries to avoid it using an umbrella, what a paradox, but this paradox seems to be imprinted in the genes. We know what the future will be, at least some of us know, either for us or those that don’t by ignorance or looking the other way, the future will be the same. The history of Earth and its inhabitants has given enough evidence about the short term future on a geological magnitude.

Money, Money, Money, what else?

I’ve asked myself so many times about the subject that I won’t do it anymore, there are no reasonable answers to why people’s population grow so wild in this limited Earth’s resources.

Who get benefits for it?, the sellers of hucksters, ALL of them. The more people, more wars, so weapons are in demand, the more people, more electronics for everyone, the more people, more taxes to cash, the more people, more thieves and murderers, earthquakes, volcano activity, tsunamis, more, more, more, more……vehicles for sale, spread of diseases, medicines, countries, diplomats, politicians, chemicals, pollution, contamination and on the other hand more lacking of food, education and access to a better quality of life. The conclusion seems to be simple, the world is dominated exclusively by money, what produces revenues drives the world, no matter of the consequences, no matter if it lasts just another generation or two, or three. What matters is all and now. Shallowness and stupidity are the two words that come to my mind to define Mankind, working hardly to be extinct in record time geologically when compared to the rest of living things, past or present.

The Farmer, the Boy and the Donkey

In the Dreamtime there was a farmer and his family, wife and little son. He farmed his land kilometres away every morning and was home on late afternoon. He decided it was about time to begin teaching his son the art of farming to maintain his family so he decided to take his son with him to the land every dawn, together with the donkey he uses to deliver the produce. After a hard day’s work they headed back home, he was used to the walk so he puts his son atop the donkey and began the long way home. They had to pass several villages before reaching theirs, when passing the first one they were able to hear the people murmuring: “that is not a good boy, his poor old father is walking while he sits comfortable on the animal back”. The farmer decides then to go himself on the donkey a let the boy walk before him. Passing another village the rumors started again: “that is not a good father, his poor son goes on foot while he rides the donkey” . After that the farmer decides that both will ride the donkey. Passing another village people say: “Very unfair, the poor donkey has to carry two bodies on him”. After that the farmer decides that both go on foot pulling the donkey with the leash. Then they pass by the last village before theirs and people talks again: “how stupid these people are, they have a donkey and do not use it”…. So is Mankind….

MAN, a mistake In Evolution?

During the last four billion years when the first unicellular organisms started life on earth, Nature has done countless experiments on evolution, millions of them have not been successful and the species evolved from it had a short living path on the Planet, in geological terms.
The successful ones produced, among millions of species, the dinosaurs (150 million y.o.), crocs, turtles, birds and mammals, only to talk about big vertebrates. Man started as Homo perhaps 7 million years ago but became modern man about a hundred thousand years back and the final evolution took shape after the last ice age, barely 10.000 years ago, the only Homo species alive.
What is the future of man as a species? Despite ALL other organisms, man can think, is able to design and construct things, create art and culture, Science and Technology, Health and medicines, but at what price? Man is specially good destroying stuff, especially the Nature around them for his own short term benefit. In fact man is the only living organism that do not follow the principles of Nature, a paradox after having tried for millenia to understand how it works. Despite all knowledge available we do not know but a nano-fraction of Nature and in general terms we do not care, we behave as if the Universe revolves around us.
What is the expectancy of man’s life on earth? Minimal if compared with modern living animals, besides that, man make things easy for Nature, killing among themselves and polluting or consuming the resources needed for their survival. Man will not stand another thousand years, thinking very optimistically. Man seem to be one of those mistakes of Nature in terms of Evolution.

Celebrities, seeding the anti-values?

A “celebrity” is a “famous person” that drives attention to the public by the media.

Fame does not mean becoming a celebrity, unless you do something to attract the attention of the public and the media, the more scandalous or outrageous is the performance of the famous, the more attract attention and idolatry of the crowd. Celebrities are mostly politicians, millionaires, people from the world of sports and entertainment, we live the era of celebrities, not the electronic age, as many of us would like to think.

Idolatry is the key word here. While attending primary school, I learned that one only adore God, if you have one, and the Saints (if available in your religion) deserve veneration. Today that concept has been twisted, commonly we hear the “celebrities” idolazing people, things, situations. The downside is that many people copy them. It is a known fact that the loss of parental guidance on their children and teachers on their students (thanks to Psychologists), together with the huge and ominpotent media influence, go towards avoiding the family and school values, accepting the “more comfortable” from the media, whatever they are, actually the anti values. You can find on Ebay or other auctions the widest variety of “things used or excreted by “celebrities”, with its certificate of authenticity….grouse and sad, people pay for that.

Above all, although the “celebrity” might use drugs, produce frequent scandals of all kind, marries and divorces many times, cheats on the partner, commit suicide or can be killed or die under suspicious circumstances, all of it is forgiven because it was and will be (after death), more famous and movies, music, videos, books, biography, will cost much more and the heirs war to the death will be to get a slice of inheritance. The convenient side of history will only remember the good, not the bad, and the media will take care of it to achieve its goal: sell, sell, sell to whom are under the influence of celebrities. How convenient is accepting the ease, the immediate, instead of the hard work to get goals. The truth is that, in my opinion, idolizing “celebrities” is a way to get to the surface a human quality that was perhaps hidden centuries ago, a giant shallowness that I would say is the quality that best defines the human kind, at least the majority of those living in urban centres, bombarded by the media aggressively in many ways.
